The custom of betel chewing has penetrated Thai culture since ancient times. All levels of society, male and female, young and old, chew betel and despite a ban on it by the government in the 1930s, the custom continues in Thailand today.
The Betel Nut ceramics are classified in to two groups based on function—those used in rituals for offerings to supernatural forces and those made to serve as containers for lime paste, a necessary ingredient for betel chewing.
